THE RESCUE OF SERBIA

ALLIES' GREAT EFFORTS

RUSSIANS CROSS. THE DANUBE

MOM SUBMARINE EXPLOITS

THE BRITISH BLOCKADE OF TURKEY

MR. ASQUITH'S SPEECH

DEBATED

ATTACK ON ; THE WAR NEWS . CENSORSHIP ■"'

To-day's cablegrams convoy fragmentary excerpts from the House of Commons debate on Mr. Asqvdth's statement. An agitation for some modification of tie war news censorship, and the right of greater freedom of criticism with regard to the war, are revealed in a debate in the House of Lords. Press comment (such as is reported) is in the nature of a dual between opposing factions. The French Premier has delivered a fiery oration in the Chamber of Deputies, which' must make dismal reading in Germany. In the Balkan ■ theatre, the Allies are straining every effort to avert a Serbian catastrophe, and the latest development given on the authority of a French newspaper is. that the Russian forces, with' munitions and gims, have crossed the Danube, Rumania being a passive onlooker. The Germans on tlio northern front of the Russian theatre have sustained checks sufficiently serious to compel the withdrawal of their lines in one sector, and on other sectors, the Russians. are stated to havo scored a 6eries of successes. News from the Western theatre is scanty. A heavy attack by the Germans in Champagne has been repulsed.
