MASTERTON NOTES

At a, meeting of the Masterton Borough Council on Tuesday evening, a letter was read from the Masterton Co-operative Dairy Company, complaining of the price charged for coke for fuel purposes. The council took an entirely different view of the situation, and ou the.motion of the Mayor it was resolved "That the council, oft behalf of the citizens of Masterton, write to tile dairy company, objecting to the high price charged for butter." Several young men of Masterton have been_ accepted for service aboard the hospital ship Maramae' The gas manufactured at the Masterton gasworks during the month of October showed an increase of 13.9 per cent, compared with the same month last year. The Masterton Borough Council was requested on Tuesday 'evening to remit the rates on a. section held by a member of the Expeditionary Force. The matter fras referred to the Finance Committee. Several thousand people assembled at tho Masterton railway station on Tuesday evening to welcome honi9 the soldiers who had returned by the Willochra. A procession was formed to the town, headed by the Silver Band and the Caledonian Pipe Band. A vigorous address >vas subsequently given by the Mayor, who exhorted the young men of the district to fill the gaps that wore being caused by sickness and wounds.
