ALL CLASSES SHARE CONTRAST WITH NEW ZEALAND'S WAR TAXES. Papers to hand by .yesterday's, English mail give full details of the War Budget taxation proposals of tho British Government and the contrast with flie sacrifices we have been called on to niako in New Zealand, is indeed striking. The following will show the new income tax at a glance. The increasein addition to the doubling enacted in last November's Budget—is 40 per cent-., but for tho current financial year, which ends next March, only 20 per cent, will bo added. All incomes of over £130 are taxed. The abatement on incomes up to £400 is £120. llie man who earns £2 10s. a week, wliich means £130 7s. a year, will pay on .£lO 75., or 18s. 7d. tliis year. The abatement on incomes up to £600 is £100. The abatement on incomes up to £700 is £70. From tho tax 365. is apparently deducted this year and £2 2s. next year for each child under 16 when tlhe income does not exceed £500. Examples for Everybody. The following, are examples of tho tax this year an'd next:—
EARNED INCOME RATE. Incomes up to £1000 pay this year Is. 9 3-sd. in tho £, and next year 2s. 1 l-sd. Above £1000 the scale for this year is:—i £1001—£1500 2s. 1 l-sd. £1501—£2000 2s. 4 4-sd. £2001—£2500 2s. 9 3-sd. £2501 and over 3s. 2 2-sd. | SUPER-TAX. The super-tax - (chargeable on £3001 and over), which is additional to income tax, is also doubled and added to as follows:— ' ' Per £ s. d. Over £8001 2 10-£9001-£IO,OOO 3 2 . Over £10,000 3 6 Plius the total tax on. incomes over £10,000 is 75., or more than one-third of the income. QUARTERLY PAYMENT. After nest year in the case of employees of all descriptions the assessment and payment of income tax is to be quarterly. In other oases payment will bo half-yearly, in January and July. Mr. M'Kenna gave the following examples of the quarterly payment of working men without any children. Th» deduction for each child under sixteen would be 9s.:— , Weekly wages.' Tho whole of tho_ additional taxes will be repayable if the individual proves that 'his real income is onefifth less than that on which ho is assessed; and there will be proportionate repayment if the income drops by a tenth. i / The following altogether new taxes were imposed:—so per cent, of all war profits over £100, after deducting income tax. The profits will bo estimated by comparing the 1915-16 balance with that of 1914-15, and the tax will be half of the difference over £100.
33 1-3 per cent, ad valorem [of tlio valuo] on imported luxuries, namely:— Motor-cars, motor cycles, motor parts, lfinoma films, hats, plate-glass, watches and clocks, musical instruments. An American car now priced at £150 will cost £200, of which £50 goes to the Exchequer. A Paris hat costing £12 will cost £16, of which £4 goes to the Exchequer.
■ Mr. M'Kenna made no change at present in the spirit and beer duties. He increased the following duties:—
Tea, duty raised from Bd. to Is. a lb. Coffee (roasted), from 2d. to 3d. a lb. Chicory (roasted), from 2d. to 3d. a lb. Cocoa, from I'd. to IJd. a lb. Sugar, to the public, id. a lb. dearer. Currants, from 2s. to 3s. a cwt. Tobacco, from 4s. Bd. to 7s. a lb. Cigarettes, from ss. Bd. to Bs. 6d. a lb. Patent medicines doubled: 3d. on Is.; 6d. on 2s. 6d.; Is. on 45., etc. The following increases 'in postal charges are made: —$d. post abolished; less weight for Id. post; 9d. for 12-word tolograins, and }cl. a word after. Extra -}'d. on postal orders up to 2s. Cxi. Dearer telephones. Dearer Press telegrams.
