A JUST CAUSE
PASTORAL LETTER OF FRENCH CARDINALS. The Cardinals of Reims, Bordeaux, Paris, Montpellier, and Lyons recently addressed a collective letter to i/he irrench Episcopate prescribing idne consecutive days' prayers, on tho occasion of the Feast of tho Assumption, for the triumph of. French arms and tho blessings of a durable peace. The letter proceeds:— "Our cause is the cause of justice, inasmuch as we are fighting for the maintenance of our territorial integrity and of our national independence; our cause is the cause of civilisation itself, as we are the defenders of the principles of righteousness, of fidelity to treaties, and of humanity, outside of of which there is no civilisation worthy of the name. Our cause is upheld by an army which is rendored invincible by tlio valour of ids chiefs and the heroism of its soldiors. But, whatever our chances of success, wo must not forget that it is God who awards victory and inflicts defeat."
