EXPORT OF CHEESE

. FOR 'ARMY REQUIREMENTS. The arrangements for tho purchase of New Zealand cheese by the Govern-' ment on-behalf of the Board of -Trado had not readied 'such a state of finality as to enable the Prime Minister to make a complete statement concerning them yesterday. Mr.,Massey.stilted, however, that the Government' had ample ■ powers to aot without any special proclamation. It ■was not intended to requisition the total cheese: export of the Dominion, but the scheme -would involve the ex'penditure of something like a million sterling. Evory company manufacturing cheese would ■ receive a notice; stating tho requirements of the Government, and instructing what proportion of that particular ' company's output would be required. The prices, which had been fixed by the Board of Trade, would be good prices, but not speculative prices. Tho -purchase business would bo controlled by tho Imperial Meat. Supply Branch, and details of tho scheme wcro now being worked out. Mr. Massey said that at meetings held at Hawera „ and Diuicdin a few weeks ago cheesemakers' expressed their willingness.to assist the Imperial Government in securing supplies in New, Zealand for the use of tho troops, and it was resolved that nothing in the way of exploitation should bo attempted or allowed.
