CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. Hie president (Mr. James Macintosh) was in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. R. W. Watorliouse, C. W. Jones, T. Ballinger, J. W. M'Lellan, J. G. Harkness, and W. F. Cuthbertson. Tho secretary presented a report on the arrangements made for the delivery of cargo to New Zealand consignees from enemy, ships interned in Java. Regarding the Wisma>r, he said that the first portion of the cargo was coming' to hand. Conoerning the Stolberg and the Lubeck,' arrangements had been made by Mr. Caleb Allen, acting for the Sydney Jai'a Ships Management Committee, whereby these cargoes had been delivered by the agents of the German Australian Steamship Company in Java, on payment of 4 per cent, general average, the consignees having to pay additional freight and transhipment charges from Java to Australia and New Zealand. The bulk of this cargo was coming forward. No such final arrangements had been made regarding the cargoes of the Roon and the Orsova, the Norddeutscher Lloyd having raised objection as to tho efficacy of the bank guarantee given on behalf of the consignees. Negotiations were being continued. The Customs Department had agreed not to charge the 1 per cent, primage duty on these cargoes, and not to subject goods of enemy origin from these vessels to the-50 per cent. Customs surtax.

A circular was received from the secretary of the Hong-Kong General Chamber of Commerce as follows: "My committee being aware that British trade literature is being circulated abroad amongst alien enemy firms, beg herewith to enclose for your information a list of such firms in this colony now in liquidation by order of the Government, and trust that you will take such eteps as will cause a cessation of such communications, however innocently they may be issued." Tliere are 26 names on the list, all of them obviously German except the following:—Blackhead and Co., Melchers and Co., Radccker and Co., Garrels, Bonier and Co., China Import, Export, 'and Bank Co., Medioal Hall, A. Bune, G. Prien.
