ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
SOLDIER'S SUICIDE.. Thp City Coroner (Mt. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M.) held an inquest at tho Magistrate's Court'yesterday afternoon ■into the circumstances conneotod • with the death of. William Hancook, a returned soldier, who was found shot dead in' the' Botanical Gat-dens on Saturday morning. According to the evidence submitted by Senior-Sergeant Mullaney, of the Lambton Quay Police Station, ,the deceased-was 31 years of age, and a native of Cornwall. He was invalided after serving with; the Main Expeditionary Force, but had Lately been reaccepted by the military authorities, arid was granted non-commissioned officer's rank with the Eleventh Reinforcements. He left ri latter stating that he intended to take his own life. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death by a bullet wound selfiiifiioted. The Coroner remarked fhat. there was no evidence to show tho eon-' dition of- the unfortunate man's mind immediately prior to-death; ; FATAL MOTOR' ACCIDENT. • - By TelosrapK—Press , Association. Dr. Fleming, of Dunedin, -was killed in a motor accident yesterday afternoon; and his chauffeur, George Fagan, injured. The car -was descending a steep road near Higlicliff, on the Peninsula, when it ■ got out of control, aaid' both occupants -were -thrown out. ' The dootor apparently struck his head on a stone, and* was killed instantaneously, Fagan was knocked unconscious, but is expected to recover.. The car was smashed to bits.
