HELP OUR SAILORS WHO GUARD OUR DESTINY

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Tho annual gathering of the •Navy League, which has always been held on Trafalgar Day, was this year postponed to a date yet to bo fixed in order to make way for the Red Cross movement on that day. Celebrations on the lines suggested for the meeting h'ero .were held in almost every part of t'b Empire (the representatives of our Allies most cordially co-operating), tho meetings taking the form of a most hearty recognition of all wo owe to the sailors of our own and the Allied Fleets.

Ono unfortunate result of tho postponement jvas that the collcction arranged to be taken up for the "Sailors' Comfort Fund" lapsed for want of tho opportunity; but we strongly feel that such an object should not be allowed to go without an attempt to do something (worthy of Wellington in recognition of the sailors of the Fleet.

We therefore invite every citizen of Wellington and of the Wellington provincial district to send to us such contributions as thoy feel able to make. The whole matter will be closed before the 'Frisco mail loaves on November 11, and the sum available remitted to London before Christmas. It seems quite superfluous to enlarge on the hardships the sailors have to bear through tho winter storms in the North Sea and at Gallipoli, or tho dangers of tho submarine and the mine-sweeping operations.

The appeal needs no emphasising, and as members of the executive of the Navy League, we will bo responsible for the funds subscribed reaching the men for whom they are given. Subscriptions may bo sont to tho secretary or any member of the Navy League Committco, or to Mr. J. L. Barnicoat, of the Union Bank, Palmcrston North.—We are, etc., J. B. HAKCOUBT, Chairman Local Committee. CECIL W. PALMER, Hon. Secretary, Wellington Branch of Navy League. P.O. Box 625, Wellington, November 1, 1915.
