PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN
SOCIETY'S ANNUAL REPORT. . The annual report of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, to be presented at this evening's meeting, states that the total, number of cases dealt with since the inception of the society is 1218, of which 109 are now cases this year. The committee reports thai; in many cases men who have been neglectful of their responsibilities have, in joining the Expeditionary Force, voluntarily made provision for their wives and families. Regret is expressed that, owing to the war," it has been unablo to press matters which aro of vital importance to the protection of women and children, such as tho appointment of policewomen, women jurors, women justices, and women visiting, justices to prison. .Britain and Australia, liavo given women such positions during the past year.
"Resolutions were passed in accordance with tho protest made by women teachers against 'the differentiation of salaries and the provisions of tho Education Act, which were unjust to women tcachers and detrimental to the health of the children under their charge.
"A resolution was passed protesting against the action of the Legislative Council in failing to pass the Factories Act, reducing tne hours of work for women in woollen factories from 48 to 45, as is the rule in other factories.
"A notable event in tho history of the society was the address delivered under the auspices of the society in the Town Hall by Mrs. Philip Snowden, the brilliant British orator, on 'Child Lifo in Great Britain.' The thanks of the society are duo to the Mayor for the use of the Town Hall for the occasion.
"Your committee desires to tender its grateful thanks to tho lion, solicitors and physicians and to the lion,, auditor for their help; to tho clerk of the Magistrate's Court for valuable advice, and assistance; to the Inspector and Sub-Inspector of Police, the Charitable Aici Committee, Alexandra Home, Salvation Army, St). John Ambulance Nursing Guild, St. Helens Hospital, the Homo of Compassion, and tho Ladies' Christian Association, for assistance and kindly co-operation."
