Reference to the death of the late Hon. J. Duthie, M.L.C., was mado at the meeting of the Council of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The Presidont (Mr. ,T. Macintosh) moved that tile Council express sincere condolences with tho members of tho family of tho late Mr. John Duthie in the loss they have sustained by his death, and that the Council place oil record appreciation of tho services he rendered to tho Chamber as President in the years 1881 and 1900, and for many years as member. Mr. Macintosh said that Mr. Duthie had been closely identified with tlio commercial life 'of the community for a very much longer period, and as a business 'man had rendered great services to the commercial community generally. Mr. T. Ballinger seconded the motion, which, was affirmed. Private Donald Craig, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, died at tho Wellington Hospital on Sunday. He will be buried with full militai-y honours to-morrow. Mr. Hugh Morrison, chairman of the Wairarapa War Fund Committed, has Seen offered a 'seat on the National War Fund Council, -and will probably accept tho position. Dr. John Craig, of Auckland, Las been appointed principal medical officer at tie May Morn camp. He enters the camp bearing the rank of major in tho N.Z.JLC. A young Now Zealander, Ist Lieut. Lloyd Findlay (son of Sir - John Findlay), has groatly distinguished himself on tliß Western front. Last week information reached Wellington that he had been reported by liis Major to have acted with great gallantry during tho battle of Ilulluch, 011 October 18. Yesterday Sir John Findlay received a cable message that tho Legion of Honour has been conferred r-n his son Lloyd, and that his eldest son, Wilfred, has boon promoted to the rank of captain. Lieut.. Lloyd Findlay, who was only 20 years of age last month, is,tho Intelligence Officer for his battalion. " The death occurred yesterday at her residence, Clyde Quay, of Mrs. Arniie Jenkinson, nifo of Mr. J. E. Jenkinsou. The late Mrs. Jenkinson was 50 years of ago. She leaves two sons, Mr. Edgar Jenkinsou, who is with the-N.Z. Forces at Gallipoli, and Mr. Horace Jenkinson, of Tub Dominion" staff. Mr. John Frasor, son of the late Captain Fraser, formerly of Wellington, who lias been a resident of South Africa since the Boer War,.now holds a captain's commission in the Rifle Brigade, and has been on active service in France for 6ome time past. Captain Fraser's sister is one of the energetio women who nre daily employed in parcelling up goods, etc., at the Town Hall.
Tile staff of the composing department of {lie Government Printing Office met oil Saturday morning to make a presentation to Mr. Ernest Hicks, who is relinquishing liis position to join the staff of Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., as town representative. Mr. Loney (overseer) made the presentation, a case of pipes, and expressed regret at losiug the services of Mr. Hicks. Gunner W. Moreland and Private A. Barlow, who are shortly leaving for the front, wero yesterday morniug presented by their fellow workmen at the Wellington Meat Export Company's works, at Ngahauranga, with smoker's outfits. Mr. B. W. Dixon made the presents tion. Mr. • Martin Duff, "of Dunedhi, who sang the tenor music in "Elijah" at the Town Hall last week, has been engaged by the Royal Choral Society to perform a .like service in "The Messiah" next month. The investiture^of_ Sir Francis Henry Dillon Bell as a Knight Commander or the Order of St. Michael and St. George by His Excellency the Earl of Liverplrol took place at Government House last night. Sergt.-Major Otto Albert Friedlander, of Ashburton, has recovered from hie recent attack of illness at Alexandria, and is leaving again for the front. He joined the British section. of _ the Ist .Company of New Zealand Engineers. Mr. S. M'Clelland left yesterday for Auckland. Mr. Noseda, traffic manager of the local staff of Huddart,' Parker and Co., has returned to Weljington after a month's visit to Australia. Captain Taylor, Lloyd's surveyor, who has been on "an extended visit to Wellington in connection with litigation in regard to the wreck of the C. and D. liner Star of Canada, at Gisborne, will leave for Brisbane by the Moeraki on Friday next. ■ •
Mr. F. W. M'Lean, who has been appointed to fill the position of Chief Engineer of the New Zealand Railways recently vacated by Mr. James Burnett, lias had a more varied railway career than most members of the New Zealand Service (states the "Railway Review"). Mr. Mac Lean attended the Edinburgh University from 1875 to 1878, when he took first-class honours in engineering. During portion of that; time and continuing until 1880, ho was a pupil of the chief engineer of the North British Railway Company, and from 1880 until the oarly part of 1884 acted as assistant engineer for the company. In June of 1884 Mr. M'Lean joined the New Zealand Railway Department, as assistant engineer, Auckland, under Mr. John. Coom, a position he filled for four years. From 1858 to' 1894, Mr. Mac Lean was successively district manager, Nelson (four years); resident engineer, Auckland (oiie year), district manager, Ncl« sou (nine months); and resident engineer, Wellington (four months). In May, 1894, Mr. Mac Lean was appointed assistant engineer to the chief engineer, Wellington, with charge of the Wellington district. About two- years ago his titlo was altered to that of resident; engineer, but his .duties remained practically the same. In June, 1897, Mr. Mac Lean loft Wellington to take up tho position of district engineer, Dunedin, where he remained until his promotion in April, 1908, to inspecting engineer, Wolliitgton.
