TRENCHES CAPTURED BY THE FRENCH FRUITLESS COUNTER-ATTACKS REPULSED Tho High Commissioner reports:— A London, October 29, 2.40 p.nr. • On the Western front, particularly violent bomb and torpedo fighting occurred last night north of the Aisne, in the Puisaleine and Quennevieres sectors. , . London, October 29, 8.50 a.m. A bombardment of Arras and Taliure is reported from Belgium. "On the Vosges we destroyed an enemy trench at Reichacherkopf, repellinga cvunter-attack. . London, October 30, 4.15 a.m. Pans reports: "In Champagne incessant fightinp; has taken place for the portions of work's at Lacourtine which are held by tt:e enemy. We captured the enemy's trenches along one front for a distance of one lrandred and fifty metres, taking two lrandred prisoners. I« the Artois region, during the night, the French progressed towards Bois-eu-HaOhe, and occupied portions of tho German trenchc-s. "South of Souchess, this morning, the Germans attempted to attack tho neighbourhood of fHill 140,' but were repulsed, by curtains of fire and machineguns. "The Champagne struggle is being continued with tho -utmost bitterness in the neighbourhood of Lacourtine. The Germans made four attempts to retake the trenches we captured yesterday, but their attacks completely failed be, fore the spirited resistance of the French, who maintained their gains." , .
