SAILORS COMFORTS FUNDS

APPEAL TO THE SCHOOLS. Following is a copy of a circular letter sent to head tradiers of schools by the Wellington branch of the Navy League:—' • "Our committee has, with regret, been compelled to abandon the postponed evening celebration of Trafalgar, although elaborate preparations had been made to do honour to the Fleets of tho Allies while perpetuating the imperishable memory of Nelson. Circumstances arose,over which the league had no control, aiid our committee felt that it was in tho best interests of tho league and its future gatherings that the demonstration proposed for November 4 should be unreservedly abandoned. "We trust, however, that you will leave no stono unturned to make the contribution to tho Sailors' Comforts Fund in your school as large as possible. For this year every school child who gives Is. will, as before, become a member of tho Navy League; but 6d. out of every such subscription will be applied to tho Sailors' Comfort Fund. Each financial Navy Leaguer will receive a co])y of a richly illustrated book, The Story of the lloyal Navy,' and all new members will receive bronze badges. In view of the special circumstances, we appeal to you to make your membership a record one. All boys and girls are eligible for membership. AVo shall be glad to enrol any teachers or other adults to full membership at 10s. 6d. oach. "The 1 prizes will be distributed at a date, to bo announced later. Should your essays not have been written yet, may we suggest an alternative subject: 'The Work of the Navy During this Great War.', and commend to your notice the attached extract from the London 'Times.' We should like the children to take copies' home for their parents' perusal. (Unlimited supplies are obtainable) ..."
