GERMAN SHIPPING LOSSES
The total gross tonnage (approximately) of ships of all nationalities captured, detained, sunk, or damaged from the outbreak of hostilities in August, 1914, amounted to nearly' 4,000,000 tons, and numbered close on 3000 vessels. ' The details of Germaji vessels swept off the seas in all parts of the world are as under:— Ships. Tonnage. Detained in United Kingdom and oversea , British ports 146 315,181 Captured in Gorman colonial ports 21 43,367 Captured aud sunk by British 8 29,424 Captured by British ... 75 186,765 Detained in Egyptian ports 18 86,038 Detained in Belgian ports 89 136,920 Detained in French and Russian ports 95 112,945 Detained in Italian ports 36 153,876 Captured and sunk by Allies ...'. 4 3,822 Captured by Allies 25 37,985 Sunk or damaged by submarines, mines, or explosions 4 6,975 _ Totals 521 1,113,258 British trawlers sunk by submarines to the end of July, numbered 105, of a tonnage of 15,087, in addition to 31 vessels of tho samo class, with a tonnage of 4229, sunk by mines or explosions. The record of neutral vessels sunk by German submarines is a long ono, numbering 43, with a total tonnago of 59,299. They comprised:— Norwegian 2 Danish 8 Swedish 8 Dutch • 2 Portuguese 2 Greek 1 No fewer than 700 writs were issued by tho Prize Court up to August 25 with reference to tho seizure of vessels or cargoes in purely prize cases. Tho net amount standing to tho credit of tho Prize Fund at tho present moment is £2,94.3,804. Nowadays tlioro is no distribution of prize money among the cantors.
