By proclamation published in a Gazette Extraordinary, the time within which bank notes are deemed to be .legal tender is extended to February 6. Tho proclamation now in forco expires on November 6, and this last proclamation is merely a Tenewal of it. The Prime Minister has had no news yet of the visit to New Zealand of Sir Rider Haggard, who, it was reported last month, was likely to visit tho Dominions as chairman of a small committee interested iu an Imperial scheme for the settlement of soldiers on land. Mr. Massey said lie had had no information from tho Homo authorities on the matter.
Thero is a strong demand for carpenters at present in all parts of New Work is offering for 30 competent tradesmen at Taulierinikau camp, hut it appears impossiblo to get tlio men in Wellington, and few men aro on the market in other centres. Over 60 labourers were sent to _ the camp this week. . Reports received from branch offices •of tho Labour Department all over Now Zealand indicate that there are very few men out of work at present anywhere, and that there is no distress resulting from unemployment.
A recruiting smoke • concert will be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall this evening by the New Zealand National Reserve, Army Service Corps. Appeals will be madoto tho men of New Zealand to play tho camo and olTer their services to their King and Country. A specially augmented orchestra. and some of Wellington's best artists. will supply an attractive programme of musical and elocutionary items. New Zealand veterans will be allotted special seats, and returned wounded soldiers will he given seats on the platform. Admission will bo freo.
