CIVIC AFFAIRS
* ■ MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. \ The City Council met last evening, The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were present also Councillors J. E. Fitzgerald, W. T. llildreth, R. A. Wright, T. Bush, L. M'lCenzie, M. F. Luckie, A. 11. Atkinson, W. H. I'. Barber, Bennett, G Frost, J. Hutcheson, and A. Veitch. It was decided that the application of the Society of Friends for a remission of rates on their Ivelburn _ Hostel be not granted, as the City Solicitor advises that the proposal has no authority in law. A cabstand to accommodate three caos is' to be provided at tho Post Office Square. The offer of two property owners at Kelburn Parade to dedicate a strip of land o feet in widthj for the formation of a high level footpath, was accepted. Property owners whose fences are encroaching upon Grant Road are to be given notice that the permission to occupy tho unformed roadway will not be reuowed after March 31, 1916. The following tenders were accepted: Car depot, Messrs. Murdocn and Wallace; cast-iron pipes and fittings, Messrs. Briscoe and Co.; insulators for lighting department, Messrs. P. It. Baiilie and Co.
