TRENCH FIGHTING IN CHAMPAGNE.
SUCCESSFUL COUP NEAR MASSIGES FIGHTING EVERY FOOT OF THE ADVANCE The High Commissioner repors:— London, October 26, 5.10 p.m. "North-east of Massiges (in tho Champagne region) a sudden attack gave the Allies mastery of a German trench in proximity to tho positions that were recently captured. Fighting has been coutinued foot by foot in the Champagne district in the Lacourtino centra; work is fluctuating over a small extent of country. There is stubborn resistance by the Allied troops, and their offensive, immediately afterwards resumed, broke the German counter-attacks."
A COSTLY ATTEMPT TO RAISE A BLUFF. . (Eec. October 27, 11.50 p.m. Paris, October 27. In their recent attempt to break through at Prunay the Germans hoped to capture lleims, and thus create a decisive effect in the Balkans. The German losses' in two days arc estimated at tiro divisions. Whole columns were mowed down and sixteen hundred corpses were counted alone; less than a kilometre (five furlongs). GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. (Rec. October 27, 11.25 p.m.) * Amsterdam, October 27. A German official communique claims that they repulsed attacks north-east of Souchez, and recovered 250 metres of ground in Champagne which was temporarily lost. "Tko French occupy a small part of tho German trenches northeast of Mesnil."
