Mr. Jtussey on Saturday in refelence' to the export of surplus wheat suggested that another census of the wheat in stock should be taken, and to this the Prime Minister' agreed. The census will bo taken at once. Private advices from Australia do not give much hope that at this late period business could be done in New Zealand wheat, as the new crop will be so soon available at much lower rates. It is still difficult to say what is even the nominal price of wheat locally, as no transactions arc taking place. The outside price now quoted for cats is 3s. at country stations, but there arc practically none available. There is some inquiry for potatoes' from Sydney, and • the price is still £6 10s. at country stations. There is very little demand for oatsheaf chaff, and the price is now £5 at country stations. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED MARKET REPORT. The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram from.the High Commissioner for lVew Zealand, dated London October 23. _ (Jfote—Quotations, • unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):— Meat.—There is a better demand for mutton and lamb this week on account of the decrease in amount, together with higher prices for Home-grown. Mutton.—Canterbury, 7 3-Bd. per lb. for light-weight; heavy-weights, 7d.; other brands than Canterbury cannot be quoted. Very few wethers are now released to be offered to the public. Ewes are selling Treely at 53d. to 6d. Lamb.—Canterbury, twos, BJd. per lb.; fours, 7Jd.; second-class quality lightweight, 7 15-lSd.; other brands than Canterbury, B£d. per lb. for best quality light-weight; ordinary quality, 7|d. peef—Chilled beef, a small supply. Hinds,' 83d. per lb.; fores, 6Jd.; New Zealand, only Inferior quality for sale, and is selling very slowly; hinds, 6d. per lb.; fores, sd. _ The market Is very unsettled. Prices are irregular. The margarine output is very large. The British output was never larger, and is selling at a high price. Butter has again accelerated sale of margarine. Danish,. 160s. or highest offer. The market is paralysed. : On account of high prices the demand has suddenly ceased. Irish creamery, the market continues dull, pet* cwt., 1565. to 1655.; Siberian, 1345. to 1403. Cheese.—The- market is very firm and steady. Canadian, white and oolonred, per cwt., 82s. to 845.; deep coloured, 04s. to ,965.;. English Cheddar, 945. to 98b.; Cheshire, 98s. to 1045.; New "Zealand, the market is cleared. Rotorua shipment is not available. United States, 745. to 785.; low irrode, 645. to 70s. Hemp.—The market is firm, with an improved demand. New Zealand good fair, per ton, on spot, £33 10s.; New Zealand fair, per ton, on spot, £31 10s. Manila, new grade, fair, per ton, £40. Forward shipment about the same. The output from Manila for the week was 22.C00 bales. Wheat.—The market is firm, with a hardening tendency. October to November shipment,- per. quarter, Canadian, 525. 6d.; American, 525. 6d. Oats.—The market is firm, but the demand is only moderate; Argentine, per quarter, 28s.
