NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBy Olescoh.T The Poverty Bay Turf Club will hold its spring meeting oil the Jlakaraka Racecoure on Thursday and Friday. Jockeys L. Wilson and B. Deeley left yesterday to ride at the fixture, and Handicapper H. Coyle leaves this morning. Jockey A. Oliver leaves lor the 60uth to-night, and will be riding at tho Rangiora meeting on Saturday. The Highden horses follow on Friday niglit. Entries for the Ashhurst-Pohanginu meeting close on November 2. The Napier trainer, A. Neale, will have a team of five horses engaged at the Poverty Bay meeting. Ono of the team, in Goldshot, may be greatly fancied in the Scurry on the opening day, and the Avondale Stakes winner Lady Elysian is to contest the weight-for-age ovent on the second day. The win of Botanist in the Scurry Handicap at Trentham put the Treadmill horse out of the hack class, but he can still race in the Spring Plate at Eiccarton, as the entries for that race closed on I'riday. In the mile in question Botanist will have.to carry Sst. 21b., and as Handicapper H. Coyle put Tst. 121b. on him in the Pearce Handicap at Trentham he doubtless regards the ,£SOO race at Riccarton as safe in tho keeping of the Treadmill horse.
By winning the Higgie Handicap at Wanganui Bonny Helen incurred a slb. penalty for the New Zealand Cup, This brings her impost up to Bst. 101b., and as the Forilell stable has a particularly worthy representative for tho big event in Rinaldo the ch. mare may forfeit her engagement in the two-mile race. It is worthy of note that Blackall, Snub, and Specialform, who are still in the New Zealand Cup, have also been nominated for the Riccnrton Welter Handicap, run on tho same day. Mr. H. Whitney will be represented at the Rangiora meeting by Cyra and Coylon. Jockey Ashley Reed, who is riding in great form at the present time, will be 'engaged at the meeting, as will -C. Emerson, S. Reid, and A. Oliver. On his form in the Champion Plate, it would appear to bo useless taking Chortle to Auckland, and probably the Multifid gelding will be allowed to forfeit his engagement in the City Handicap. One well-known Gi6borne sportsman, who was present at the meeting, invested heavily on Chortle, whom ho declared was the equal of Bobrikolf. This i? high praise, and hardly merited. Though at his best Chortle is certainly a high-class horse, yet ho has so far not equalled the deeds of Bobrikolf. F. Tilley went south last evening with his team for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Rinaldo ran a great race in the Nainai Handicap on Monday, and was flying in fourth place at the finish. Newcomers in A. Goodman's stables at l'rentham include Signorile and Merry Gain. Now that Pavlova is out of tho Now Zealand Cup, A. Oliver is without a mount in that race, but it was rumoured in the City last evening that he would bo found on Sinapis on the day. The Martian filly Marsinah and a colt by Provocation, also owned by Dr. Herbert, have been given to J. Jamieson to train. Balboa is working very well at Trentham, and the Derby winner is likely to give a good account of himself in anything he races in at Riccarton. Some surprise was expressed locally that Sinapis was not given a race at the Wellington meeting, as it would certainly, have assisted her preparation for the New Zealand Cup. The absence of Sweet Tipperary from the Juvenile Handicap was also a surprise. It is understood the latter is being reserved for the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes, but youngsters that havo had a bit of racing will-certainly havo a big advantage over her.
Tino Atua, winner of the Juvenile Handicap at Trentliam, is not engaged in the Welcome Stakes at either Ellerslie or Kiccarton.
