ENCOURAGING HOPES OF DECISIVE TURN GERMAN PRESSURE ON THE DVINSK LINE By Telegraph—Picas Association—Ooßyxiglri London, October 25 The "Daily Telegraph's" correspondent at Petrograd says: "Nothing like the full tale of prisoners has been told in the communiques! Later information shows that 7500 men were taken a Baranovitch, and 6000 were captured astride the Kovel-Kieif Tailway. The haul of prisoners recalls the palmy days of tlio Galician campaign. • v "Without over-indulging in optimism, it is undeniable that recent events encourage hopes of an early and clfcisive turn of the tide on the Russian front. The Russian journal, ' 'Novoo Yremya" states thiat there are 80,000 Germans now on the Dvinsk front, between Illtusk and Drisviaty. They have already lost over 40,000 men. The Germans have an-immense weight of artillery, but officers' letters remark upon the power and accuracy of the Russian gunfire. TERRIFIC FIGHTING EAST OF ILLUKST The High Commissioner reports:— London, October 26, 7.35 p.m. Petrograd reports: "On the left bank of the Dvdna six German attacks were repulsed. "East of Illukst there has been terrific fighting against the German advance, which the enemv has been unable to develop. "Fcrocious attacks west of Charterisk have occurred. During our coun-ter-attack we took one thousand prisoners." FIVE DETERMINED ATTACKS REPULSED. (Rec. October 27, 0.5 a.m.) Petrograd, October 2G. "We repulsed five determined attacks southward of the Illukst railway, on the left bank of the Dvina. During their sixth attempt the Germans entered one of our works, but we cut up the majority of them, taking prisoner the remainder." "The enemy pressed us at one point in the Komarova district, but reinforcements saved the situation." GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. Amsterdam, October 25.3 A German communique states: "The Russians forced a landing near Domesnces, but returned to their vessel before the approach of the Germ wis. "We ejected, the enemy from positions north-west of Dvinsk and stormed Illukst, taking prisoner 3000." (Rec. October 26.. 10.35 p.m.) Amsterdam, October 26. A German communique states: "We repulsed the Russian attacks south east of Riga. ' "Our weak foroes which crossed tlio Illukst withdrew to the western bank before superior enemy forces. "Russian attacks north of Lake Drisviaty were unsuccessful. ' "The Austrians west of Komarev, on a 41J-kilometre front (about 26 miles), penetrated the enemy's positions."
