TRENTHAM RACES

SPRING MEETING

CHAMPION PLATE WON BY

DESERT GOLD

TARINGAMUTU AHEAD IN THE HANDICAP

Dull and showery weather prevailed for the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, but the attendance was not greatly affected, those present including His Excellency the Governor (the Earl of Liverpool) and party, tho Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. ■P. Massey) and other members of tho National Ministry, and some thousands of soldiers in uniform. The racing track was a trifle heavy as the result of tho rain and the times for tho different races vero slower than on tho opening day, but no fault could be found with the duality of the sport. Speculation on the totaiisafor was brisk throughout the day, and by the time the eighth race was decided a. total of .£41,781 passed; through the machine. This made the aggregate for the two days .£74,104, as against .£68,347 for the two days last year. The whole of the acceptors' went to the post for tho Steeplechase, Agatha Green again being favourite. Different tactics were tried on tho mare to-day, and sho was taken to the front. Her jumping was all that could be desired, but at tho finish the light-weight. Otupai, ran away from her. Lady Renown was a poor third just clear of Nita. Roseblusli ran off ami Chattis fell:

Rumania, Hylatus, and Thoughtful wero supported in that order for the Tararua Handicap. Marsinah showed out for a. bit, but Martyress then rushed ahead and led into the straight. At tho distance Dribble took charge and, despite a' strong challenge by Hvlatus, she ivon by a neck. Thoughtful was close up, and then came Rumania. Midnight Star was badly left. Two Lights was a better favourite than Seddul Bahr in the Trial Stakes, while Gold Painting and Moutoa Queen were also well supported. It was a splendid race, to watch as tliß whole of the candidates had chances right to the distance. Here Red Ribbon shook off the others, and after a good finish won by a bare length. Moutoa Queen was again in a Minor place, and Two Lights finished next. Stop, Gold Painting, and Probation were prominent of the othere. Kooya, Maniroa, Botanist, and Master Achilles were withdrawn from tho Pearce Handicap, for which Goldstream started at a short price. Tatterley led at a fnst pace down the backhand at the halfmile tha field was strung out. Taringamutu and Goldstream joined Tatterlev at the distance, and the pair left tho field, but Haumakaka put in a good run, and though Taringamutu won easily, the light-weight acoounted for the favourite, who finished third. Then came Tangihou, Tatterley, Marco Bello, and Kaminolie. The winner rah badly on Saturday, but since then her teeth had been attended to, and her owner, Mr. G. Nash, was quite confident 9he would win. Ho laid Emerson a good stake to nothing for the victory. Emerson also received a gold-mounted whip, which had been sent from England by Colonel Pearce for the rider of the winner.'

Common talk said that Tino Atua waa nnlucky in» the Wellesley Stakes, and the public, taking the cue. made the fillv n hot order for the Juvenile Handiest). She jumped out cleanly and was not headed, though Nystad threw out a strong challenge at the half-distance, and was-only beaten by a neck. Hyllus was clear of the others, and then came Tinkler and Lady General, with-Thames tailed off. Special interest-was taken in the Champion Plate, and the three favourites. Desert Gold, Chortle, and Nones each carried over four Desert Gold stripped well, but -her trainer was not over sanguine on account of the dead state of the track. Nones looked a pioture, while Chortle showed that he had done a lot of work. The raco needs little description, for the favourite led throughout and never looked like getting beaten. Nones was on. her quarters over the last furlong, but she was unable to wear down the favourite, who previously had proved her superior as a two-year-old. Chortle shaped badly, and was tailed off at the finish. Desert Gold was afterwards led oa to the lawn, while His Excellency the Governor presented the trophy attached to the race, to Mr. T. H. Lowry, the filly's owner. Sea Lord. Ti<lden by Oliver, defeated a hot favourite in Limoet (Deeley) in the Hnaliine Handicnn. The Trentham mare Rongora was well clear in third place, and then came Panmure, Pearl form, and Need. The race was run in a heavy shower and very little oould be seen of it until the field race on to the course 1 proper. , There was heavy betting on the con-cluding-event. Centre being a slichtly better favourite than Tete-a-Tete. while Block Lupin and Chakwana were also well supported. Centre pulled his backers through after a keen struggle with Black Lupin, but Tete-a-Tete ran disappointingly and was evidently not at home on the heavy track.
