THE WOLF AT THE DOOR
MEAT AND BREAD FAMINE IN GERMANY HUNGRY CROWDS AT THE MARKETS By Telegraph.—Press Association—Oopyrislit London] Octobor 24. Extraordinary . scenes at the meat markets ' of' Berlin, are described by the Socialist newspaper "Vorwaerts." At one. market, near the central slaughterhouse, "inferior but still fit" meat was sold: Although it was open at 7 in the'morning, 800 women assembled on the previous afternoon, and waited all night. Only 61b. of meat is sold to each customer.. Sometimes the soldiers push tho women aside, and insist on being served first. Hundreds of women daily are supplied, but several have been compelled to wait. for three nights to procuro meat.
At tho Andreas Halle the crush was tremendous. The police, were swept aside and flattened against the walls. Women's hats and clothes were torn off. These scones occur weekly. The prices of commodities are becoming higher and higher. A roast joint or steak cutlet seldom appears on a middle-class tablo. Beef has doubled in price, eggs are very difficult to obtain, and bread is inferior in quality and insufficient in supply.
