October 25, 8.15 p.m.) Melbourne, October 25. .The correspondence between the Federal Government and Sir George Reid in reference to the non-renewal of his appointment "as High Commissioner, ■with the letters setting out the terms of the appointment, has been published. Sir' George Reid points out that he gave up a career at the Bat and the Federal House, representing £4000 per annum-, to take a position involving , great expense, which had been looked upon as official, and not an uncertain political post, entitling him to expect a renewal for another term if his discharge of his duties should be satisfactory. Subsequently he received animplied promise of renewal from the Cook Government. : . '
The correspondence concludes with a lottor from Mr. Mahon (Federal Minister for Home Affairs), stating; "This Government declines to recognise the iright 'of a previous Government to bind ■its successors by a verbal arrangement in respect to future vacancies in the public service." [The bodies of a young .unidentified man and woman were discovered in a bedroom at Whitehall Chambers, where they had been resident for some weeks.
