TRENTHAM RACES

SPRING MEETING

THE WELLESLEY STAKES

RESULT A BIG SURPRISE

HANDICAP WON BY MONTANO

Saturday's racing at Trentham—tho opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting—was witnessed by a- big crowd, which included thousands of soldiers now in training for scrvieo at tho front. His Excellency the Governor (the Earl of Liverpool) and party were present, as were several, members of the National Ministry, and leading sportsmen from different parts-of the Dominion. The weather was seasonable andpleasant, the sport of an interesting .character," and those' present speciilated freely on the totalisator during the day. For the eight races, the total amount invested was ,£32,323, as against ,£28,675 on tho first day of tho last Spring Meeting. A feature of "tho racing was the victory of Rockbound in tho Wclleslcy Stakes, tho Bokeby colt being the absolute outsider of tho race. There were only 56 tickets ouposite his name on the machine.

The withdrawal of Naupata gave back ers the idea that -Agatha Green would win the steeplechase, and she proved to lie the best of good things, though sho was nearly beaten through an accident. At the first fence Nita came down and to save galloping on the prostrate jockey, M'Sweeney (rider of Agatha Green) checked his mount. The result was that ho was carried on to the double, which is alongside the water jump. Nothing daunted Agatha Green was set at tho double, which she cleared, but by this time the others had a big lead. M'Kwecney, however, sat quiet,-'and at the finish ho won nicoly from Otupai, with- Cliattis third, and Lady Renown nest. Roseblush ran off at the logs the first time. Pearlform was the only withdrawal from the Rimutaka Handicap, for which Seadown was backed down to a short price. The favourite ran a good race, but in the end he had to strike his colours to Seddul Balir. and the lightweight, Thoughtful. Gold Painting and Mystified were out by themselves till well into the straight, where the favourite and Thoughtful took charge, but over the last bit the Ilighden candidate, Seddul Bahr came fast and won by a baro .length. -After the place-getters oamo Ladogeur, Red Ribbon, and Rumania. Deviation got a bad check at the half-mile and Ilylatus was slow to find his feet, and then came on the outside at the turn. Miraculous was prominent for about six furlongs, but failed to finish on.

As was generally thought to bo the ca6o tko Spring Selling Plato went to a very short-priced favourite in Hymettius, but lie had to be l'ickien right out to beat Lady Daylesford, whiie Medallist was third. The winner was sold after the race to C. Pritcbard, who was acting for one of his clients, for 150 guineas. Considerable speculation, covering a wide range, took place in the big event. Bonny Helen, Montana, and Go'dstream were the prime fancies, and the latter proved to be a good thing, for hejstarted on the extreme outer, and then won after a good'finish with Battle Eve and Goldstream. Battle Eve led nearly all tlio way, and, when challenged a- furloug from home, he battled on better than was expected. GoJdstream was unlucky at the barrier, as was T'angihou. Bonny Helen failed badly, and so <tid Multiply. Ivooya was tailod off in the. early part, but finished on well, while Maniaroa wag most disappointing. Kaminoho was always prominent, but failed to go farther than tho mile. Marco Bello got a lucky run on the fence at tho turn, and iinishod fourth, clear of Square Deal, who was prominent throughout. Sir Knox also did .well. , Hauinakalca finished tailed off. The Welkin colt, Three, was the prime fancy in the Shorts Handicap, but several of the other runnere carried big money. The favourite as usual began very smartly, but ho was Bteadied as he was hanging out badly, and Hyginas, Master Achilles, and Teto-a-Tete were prominent as they raced on to the course proper. In the run home Three and Hyginas had a neck-and-neck struggle, and tho lastnamed got the verdict by a head. Tete-a-Tete was a neck away, and then camo Chakawana and Taringamutu together, the winner accounted lor Three on tho same course last season. The Wainui Handicap saw' the New Zealand Gup candidates. Indigo and Biaokall in commission, and they filled places, being'split by Black Lupin, who was not fancied on the machine. Expect, who was a hot favourite, ran a fair'race, but he 'had no clianco with tho winner, who was' always going well. Hygia and Black Lupin were in command to tho bottom' of the straight, where Indigo shot out and won very comfortably. Black Lupin, Blackall, and Expect finished together.

Great interest centred in the appearance of the two-year-olds for tho Wellesley Stakes. In the birdcage Nystad and liockbound took the eye, but the former was ruled out, boing soeinwhat green, Egypt stripped well, and so did Sabana, llyylus, Tino Atua, and Barley Sdgar. Good Hope bore the appearancoof lvant%g time. In the preliminaries nothing «noved better than Nystad and Rockbound. The start was not delayed long, and the first to become prominent was Thestius and Egypt, who were the public fancies. Nystad jumped out well, but he zig-zagged all over the course. When the last furlong: was entered upon Egypt had shaken off Thestius, but Ilockbouud *ihen challenged him, and in a great finish won by ahead. Tino Atua was close up third, then came Thestius and Nystad, Rockbound is by the defunct llokeby from Seashell, dam of two speedy ones in Sea King and Kina. He is tlie first of tho Rokebys to score, and is owned by the southern sportsman, Mjr. It. Acton Adams, who was present to 6eo him win. He is a very taking colt and should do well, as ho is a strong finisher. He was • not greatly fancied by the stable, as his companion, Sabana, another Rokeby, has generally defeated him in private. Botanist was favour it o in a good betting race in the Final Scurry, and after a great finish ho scorea by a head from Moutoa Queon with Limpet a head away in third place. Tho last-named was in iji'ont at the distance, but tho top-weight hirished resolutely, and got Tip in tho last couple of strides.
