WAR LEAGUE
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the acting-executive of the War League and others was lipid on Friday night in the Accountants' Chambers, kindly lent by Messrs. Williams, Hunt and Co. There were present: Messrs. P. H. von Haast (in the chair), J. Mills, W. Field, M.P., Professor Hunter, J. Macintosh, J. J. M'Gratli, A. R. Atkinson, C. R. Smith, Captain Simson, Captain Barclay, Messrs. St-acc, and S. A. Atkinson. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Dr. .Newman, Hon. A. L. Herdman, Messrs. A. Jolly and A. Marryatt. The reports of__the various sub-com-mittees wero received and adopted. It was reported that a recruiting sergeant had been placed at the disposal of the recruit-in" oflice at tlio Town Hall. Tho following members of the executive of tlio Women's National Reserve were present by invitation Dr. PlattsMrs. Hall-Thompson, Mrs Holmes, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Hall, and Mre. Tripp.
Dr. Platts-Mills moved' the following motion: "In view of the foot that tlio women's branch of the National Reserve is a movement initiated 'by the women themselves for the purpose of assisting recruiting by providing women workers whorovor possible to replace men wlio are otherwise competent to enlist, and to assist tlio Government by providing as much voluntary labour as may be required; in view of the fact also that its platform lias been officially sanctioned by the Government, in any co-operation of work that may take place, the War League acknowledge this branch as tho controlling body for the organisation of women for the above purposes." This was carried unanimously, and it was decided to recommend 1 the War League at its general meeting next week to alter its constitution to confine membership to men so as best to co-operate with the Women's Reserve. Arrangements were made for a general meeting of tho War Laguo (to elect a permanent executive) to be held on Friday next at 8 p.m., at the No. 1 Committee Room, Town Hall. The Mayor will preside, and the hope was expressed that all men, especially the young men, would join the league' in large numbers and take part in tho route marches that are being arranged. All younjr men aro invited to take part and get into training, whether they are able to go to the front or not. The hope was also expressed that large numbers would join before the meeting on Friday, so as to take part in electing an executivo that would be representative of the citizens as a whole. Tickets of enrolment can be obtained at Aldous'. Armit's, Miss Woodhouse's, Cusack and Impson s, and Christeson's.
