Olio of Canterbury's early setters, m the person of. Mr. W. J. "Williams, has just passed away at Wavorley, where he had resided for some years. Tho late Mr. Williams, who was 7S years of age, left Home when, a lad, and found his way to tho goldfields 01 Australia. Subsequently ho arrived in Now Zealand in 0110 of the first fom immigrant ships, and proceeded to the goldfields of Otago. Later he went to Christchurcli, which at the time eon. sisted of a post office, store, hotel, and a few dwellings. Ho was married in Ohristehurch just over fifty-one years ago, and resided there for a number of years, working in tho town and helping to lay out and form a number of streots. After farming in the Canterbury district for many years ho wont to Wavorley, wlicro bo resided until his death. He leaves a widow, thres sons (including Mr. William Williams, of and ouo daughter.
