Their casualties Numbered 1.8,000. The Russians in Eastern Galicia are advancing rapidly. RESULTS OF SURPRISE ATTACKS. Petrograd, October 22. A communiquo states: "Our surprise attacks carried part of the enemy's positions in the Novo Aloxinez district (on the Galician borders northward of Tarnopol), and also eastward of Lopuschno, northward of Novo -Alexinez. Wo captured .during tho day 148 officers, 7500 men,- two_howitzers, and a number of machine-guns.
A GERMAN COMMUNIQUE. (Rec. October 24, 3.35 p.m.) Amsterdam, October 23. A German communique says: "Wo counter-attacked oast of Baranovitcbi, capturing 1150 Russians. "General von Linsingen outflanked tlie Russians west of Czartorysk, taking 3600 prisoners. The Russians broke the lines adjoining, and the troops on the previous da.v got_ behind our artillery lines, capturing six guns." ANTICIPATING A RETREAT, Petrograd, October 22. The Germans liavo informed the people of Mitau that unless Riga is captured thoy will' razo all the towns and villages on the line of retreat.
