NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBr GcLe.n'Coi.'] TO-DAY'S RACING AT TRENTHAM. The Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting wall commence at Trenthaiu today, and, with overy prospect of §ne wpatlier, there should be ft record crowd present. Eight events are set down for decision, and the indications are that tho sport will prove vary interestiug. A special railway time-table has been arranged, and trains will leave To Aro Station for the racecourse at 10.21 a.m. ami 10.39 a.m. From Lambton Station special ■ trains will leave for the racecourse at the following times:—lo.lo a.m., 10.19 a.m., 10.37 a.m., 10.55 a.m., 11.4 a.m., 12.G p.m., and'l.lo p.m. On: the return journey, trains will leave the racecourse at frequent intervals from 0.10 p.m.

A fact that should Tie noted by visitors to the meeting is that tho order of tho events has been alteied slightly, and tile.Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase is to bo the opening event. It will start at noon, so those who like a jumping raco should bo there by that hour. Of the seven acceptors, the Porirua stable shelters two, viz., Naupata and Agatha Green, but they race in different ownerships. Tho first-named, who is carrying a big weight, may command most support. He is a stranger to the course, but his stable companion has Won over it. Several of the runners in the Rimu/taka Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, will be well supported, Rumania {AOliver), a winner at Napier and Hastings; Seadown (C. Emersou) a dual winner at Wangauui; Ladogeur, Red Ribbon, Hylatus, and Sedd-el-Bahr. The lastnamed ran Seadown to a head at Wanganui, and now msets tli& Trenthani horse on 81b, better terms. Both horses should be better than at Wanganui, and may bo found again fighting out the finish. Earlier in the season the two-year-olds did not promise well, but at the conclusion of the C.J.G'. meeting it will likely be argued that they are quite up to tbe standard of previous years. In the .Wellesley Stakes to-day there ate some very smart youngsters engaged, but tho best support will bo given to tliosf who have had a Tace. These include winners in E"ypta and Thestius, both smart colts. Others that have shown pace in their race 3 are Sabana, The Finland—-La Cloche filly, and Maoi-iknder. The Highden colt Nystad is a very fast youngster, but want of a race may "beat liim, though Ermengarde won the same event at her first start. The Hymottus-Florigold colt has a private reputation, but the horses that have raced havo always a big advantage over their rivals, and Thestius may bo out in front the whole way.

There is a disposition in some quarters to regard the Selling Race as over bar shouting, and the name of Hymettiim is being called. His form lately has teen verv bad, but that unless bad luck overtakes the Ivaramui representative at the barrier to-day he is likely to bo in the rin" after the race. A.i old campaigner in Medallist may participate in lhe profits. The New Zealand Cup candidates, Indiixo Slogan, and Blackall, are carded to' compete in the Wainui Handicap. Deploy will ride the first-named, and L. YVilson will be up on Blackall. The form of the latter has not been what could bo expected from a well-backed horse for tho New Zealaud Cup, but Indigo has always run well in first-class company, and in the Trentham Gold Cup, which was run ill record time, he had Warstep doing her absolute best half a mile from home. The only tiling against R. Gooseiuan's charge is that ho may not be suited to the hijjir sciio' of weights, while it will be all m fnVoii.r of Expect, whose form at Wanganui showed him to be far from the spent light ho was thought to lie.

The company in the big'handicap is linrdlv »P to the standard of previous years!' but thero is in it the material for ii verv interesting contest. Track form points to Coldstream as sure to acquit himself well, and in tbe absence of Pavlova and Nones, he and Bonny Helen mav be'the best liked. Montana has Napier and Otaki form to recommend him. That good performer, Chortle, is at tho top of the list for iho Shorts Handicap, but under such a big weight he may not l)"»in smartly enough for some of tho light-weights, notably Chakwana, Tete<ilotc. and Three. The Final Scurry Handicap, five furlongs. is the concluding event, aid a big lield is likely to face tbe starter. M<itimba, Botanist, Moutoa Queen, and Lim-' pet are all sure to run well. The leading jockeys will be mounted as follows during the day:— B. Deelev: Red Ribbon, Thames, Multiply, Chortle. Indigo, and Limpet. Oliver: Rumania, Expect, and Nystad. C. Emerson: Seadown, Thestius, TariligiillllUi.ti Wflllif-ti iMid I'iipiuh'A, .W, M; fcfdd-el-BiUv, JfotUe Jive,

Panmure, Betrada, and Good Hope. J. Buchanan: The Karamu horses. A Eeed: Montana, Chakivana, Miraculous, and Happiness. S. Keeth Plunder. Ij. Wilson: Dowjliam, Blackall, Kooya, Dribble, and Maorilander. C. Price: Arlington, Bonny Helen. 0. M'Arten: Sea Lord. Pavlova and Manu have been scratched for all engagements at the meeting. The reported arrival of BeeatTTentham ivas ineoiTect. The Martian maro will bo racing at Timaru to-day. C. Emerson had a mount m the last race at Timaru on Thursday, and he does not arrive from tho south until this ( nioniing.
