Over a thousand employees of tlio Australian Woollen Mills have struck work because they wero not allowed to participate in tho bonus, which was paid to tho foremen. Military contracts are held up. BOLTED FROM THE DETENTION CAMP. EIGHTY SOLDIERS AT LARGE. (Roc. October 22, 9 p.m.) Melbourne, October 22. Over eighty soldiers escaped from tho detention camp. The majority have not been captured. Unless they return the authorities propose to oxpose them, publishing their names and descriptions. HICH COMMISSIONERSHIP. SIR GEORGE RBID'S SUCCESSOR. (Rec. October 22, 9 p.m.) Melbourne, October 22. Tho Federal Cabinet has discussed the appointment of Sir George Reid's successor to the office of the High Commissioner in London. Though, nothing has been divulged, the newspapers accept as a foregone conclusion that Mr. Fislier (the Federal Premier) will succeed Sir George Reid.

October 22, 9.10 p.m.) Sydney, October 22, Cabinot baa abandoned the idea of dedicating Sydney Government House and grounds to the public pleasure, and has decided that the State Governor shall re-occupy it. The present viceregal residence has been transformed into a hospital for returned soldiers. [.Government House, Sydney, was the bono of bitter contention between the Labour Government and the _ Federal Government, backed by. public sentiment, and even figured in litigation. It was held that the residence should be dedicated to the use of the Gov-ernor-General when in Sydney, but the New South Wales State; Government dissented, and turned it into a public resort.]

Sydney, October 22. The workmen on Walsh Island have given a fortnight's notice of their intention to strike owing to tho Government's slowness in awarding deferred and holiday, pay. The men on the island aro manufacturing munitions, and tSio strike will cause great inconvenience and delay. FEDERAL ARSENAL AT CAN* BERRA. Melbourne, October 22. . The Federal Government has decided to begin tho construction of an arsenal at Canberra at a total cost of £95,000. An additional £110,000 will bo spent on a garden suburb for the arsenal workers. Tho Premier stated that nearly two millions of loan money was falling due in January. He proposed to float a loan in London to redeem the loans. 'A compulsory conference has been called for next Friday in ' connection with the decision of the Brisbane branches of tho Federated Marine Engineers' Association and the Federated Seamen's Union to striko for improved wages and working conditions. TASMANIA'S FINANCES. DECREASE IN REVENUE. Hobart, October 22. In tho Assembly the treasurer tabled, without reading, the Financial Statement. The rovenue decreased by £13,894, as compared with the previous year. The estimated revenue for the current year is £1,335,613; expenditure, £1,297,367: surplus, £38,246.
