BACK TO THE OLD WEAPONS
Very interesting is the reversion to ancient conditions of warfare. In Spain's recent war with the Moors stones ivero slung very much in the same way as the Eomans slung them at the Carthaginians 2000 years before. In the Bulgarian capture of Adriauople herds of cattle wore driven in front of the attackers' lino, just as the Swisa did in the middle ages, while the Bulgarians donned cuirasses while cutting the wire entanglements. And now in the trench warfare the French have found that knives are much more handy weapons at close quarters than, bayonets, and going still further along the same path have reintroduced the casque or steel helmet, the morion endeared to us all by "Marmion" and many a dashing tale of wars fought long ago. Shields, too ( have for: some months past played their part in English trenches, while on the Italian frontire recourse has been had to that oldest of weapons—tho teeth.
