a number of years past. Benzol is in many ways superior to paraffin, and it has t'h© advantago of being easily vaporised, and its behaviour in the carburetter and cylinders is very similar to that of gasolene. The only objections to lfcs_ use seem to bo that 1 a sticky deposit may bo left in tho cylinders, while the odour of exhaust has tho disagreeabla smell 0 t sulphur. It will bo seen, therefore, that it is a serious competitor of gasolene. Tho only other available liquid fuel which .'an considered is alcohol. -But this spirit docs not present the same prosP?®J' as . paraffin or benzol, while file dmiculties attending its manufacture m large quantities renders it unlikely that it would be. generally used as a power producer for many years to come. The general conclusion, therefore. to which these considerations lead is that if the motor-car world desires to escape from the grip of the wholesale gasolene producers, it must undertake seriously and systematically experiments with both benzol and paraffin, and that manufacturers of automobiles must consider new design for carburetters which will use heavier fuels. It is obviously useless to complain that casoteno producers aro obtaining higher prices than for years past, and it would seem that scientific investigation should be made with these substitutes, and when cither nf those can ( he used without difficulty it is pretty safe to assume that the pries of gasolene will not only cease to rise, but will show a tendency to fall. In this direction lies the hope of the motorist for cheaper fuel.
