NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBY GLKNCOJ.I

It is not generally known that. Maori Mat, winner of the Debutante Stakes at Oaulfield, is by Maori King from Tatters, dam of Tatterley. He is trained at Randwick.by the ex-New Zealander, J. Whitworth. .The North Canterbury-Oxford Meeting, which is to be held at Rangiom on tlio SitTiirday before- tho New Zealand Cup, looks like. being a successful one. Included in the entries are T. Quinlivans team of Tatterley, Sweet Malt, and Eligible. Evidently tho last-named is destined for Ricearton, and will be allowed to drop out of the City Handicap at Ellurslie. With tho like of Tatteney engaged in the sprint events' the haiidicapper will have a difficulty in bringing, the othersrepresenting as they do several classes—together. The acceptances received for the Wellington Meeting are more than satisfactory, and very, fow horses have, been allowed to drop out. The defection of Balboa hero and at Riccarton probably mains that the -chestnut will not be asked to race until the Auckland Qiip M?etlPg. Hoy, who has dropped out of the big handicap, may bo given a run on tne second day, and Imarose is to go to AYaverley, where the Cup looks like falling to his bid, while Deviation is engaged in a hackevent run earlier in the day. Loyal Arch is tho only other defection, and i*'esumD. Moraghan's Ally id to contest tho l.Tlampioh Plate, as a win in that event would • not entail a penalty for the City Handicap at Ellerslie. Montana and Deo are the only horses with two engagements on the opening day. The former is in the Wellington Handicap and Bee is in the Wellington and Shorts Handicaps. The evont at Trentham to whiich most people are looking forward to with pleasurable anticipation is the Champion Plate. With the exception of Warstep all the best weight-for-age horses are engaged, and the meeting of the three fillies, Loyal Arch, Desert-Gold, and Nones, with Chortle, will be brimful of interest.' Tho success of three imported horses in t)i©' Caulfield Cur bears out tho oft-re-peated'charge that foreign horses .are unusually well treated by tho Australian handicappers, but they Tardy err in the same way as regards horees iTom tho Do-., minion. Indigo, 9st. 91b., and Montana, 9st. 31b„ were omitted from the list of acceptances for the Wainui Handicap, and Step, Gst. 71b., from the Shorts Handicap.
