Archbishop O'Sliea, who has been on | a visit to America, will return to 'Wellington by the Main Trunk express this afternoon. Ho was met at Auckland by Dean ilegnault, who wiU also return to-day. A Press Association message states that the University Council lias appointed Mr. H. D. Bedford Professor of Economics and History at a salary of £700 per annum. A pleasing ceremony took place yesterday morning at the Royal Oak Hotel, when"the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward presented to Sergeant T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., a handsome pair of prismatic field glasses from the members of the liberal Party in the House. 'The glasses bore the inscription —"To dear Tom /from his Party Slates. October 12, 1916." In making tho presentation, Sir Joseph Ward said Sergeant Seddon carried with him the good wishes of every member of tho House for his success in the noble work in which ho was taking part, and he could assure him that not only his friends and fellow members of the House, but the public of New Zealand would watch his career with ths deepest interest. They would all look forward to seeing him come back to New Zealand well and strong, and ready once more to take his place in the .Parliament of the country. He felt sure that Sergeant Seddon's action would be a stimulant in inducing many more young men to join tho colours. In acknowledging the present, Sergeant Seddon thanked Sir Joseph Ward, and asked him to convoy to his brother members his warm appreciation of the very useful sift. It was always- hard to part with old friends, but he considered it his duty to join the forces, and lie was proud of the fact that he was going out with a fine body of men, who would do all in their power to uphold the prestige of New Zealand and the Empire in tho hour of need.

He went with the Expeditionary Force to Samoa, and two days after returning to the Dominion enlisted with the otli Reinforcements. He is only twenty-one years "JTb. M. Litchfield, of the Bank of New Zealand, has received cable advice that his son Eldon, who lias been studyin" medicine at Guys Hospital, has qualified 51.8.C.5. and P. London and obtained a commission in the R.A.iI.G. Dr. Litchfield takes up duties in the service on November 1. Mr. Sydney Stidolph, of. the Gear Meat Co, I'M received advice that his son, Lance-Corporal Frederick (wounded) is making a good recovery, but is not likely to be fit again for the firing , ine . Ho is oxpec ed back in Wellington shortly.
