FURTHER GAINS BY THE ALLIES i i The Higli Commissioner reports:— London, October 17, 4.35 p.m. "In Artois last night we captured a strong barricade south-east of Neuville St. Vaast, maintaining the position in spite of two counter-attacks. "In the Lihons sector there has been a violent bombardment on both sides. "In Lorraine we have gained a hundred metres of trenches north of Keillon, in the course of obstinato fighting. "Our aviators bombarded the German revictualling centres at Mezieres and Azoudanze, and the Avricourt railway station, on the night of .October 15 and 16." London, October 18, 1.40 p.m. "Tliero is artillery fighting in the Artois region and grenade contests in the Aisne region. "11l Lorraine, the enemy's counter-attacks at Reillon wero repulsed.
