Bassett, Aucjrlaud's Victorian Cross hero, is 23 years old, and is a son of Mr. and Mrs. I' 1 . Bassett, of Burleigh Street, Mount Eden. He was a member of the Newmarket branch of the National Bank when war broko out. On one occasion young Bassett found two armed burglars attempting to open the bank safe. Ho pluckily tried to hold up tho intruders, and called for help'. He succeeded in preserving intact tho bank property, but the burglars escaped. His conduct was greatly appreciated by. the bank officials.
