DRYDEN, Chief Postmaßter. Chief Post OGlco. Wellington, October 18, 1915. Mr. Ernest George Hayes, wlio was gazetted a sccond-lieutenant at the end nf August, is the first well-known professional cricketer te obtain a commission in tho British Army. He was born at Peckham in 1876, and has been associated with the Surrey eleven sinco August of 1896. His first appearance in first-class cricket was against tho Australians, and he had to play Jones, the Australian demon bowler, then at his fastest. Hayes was in for two hours and a half, and scored 62. Since then lio has put up many fine scores for Surrey and in Players v. Gentlemen games, and has represented England against Australia._ and South Africa. "-Ernie" Hayes joined tho Sportsman's Uattalion when first it was formed.
Mr. John B. Herreshoff, tlie famous American yacht designer, ivlio died recently, was tho man most responsible for tlie successful defence of tho America- Cup, for lie designed Vigilant, Defender, and Columbia, which defeated tho British challengers Valkyrie 11, Valkyrie 111, and the first Shamrock; and lie also designed the boat which was, in happier circumstances, to have raced the latest Shamrock. The marvellous thing about Mr. Herreslioff was that he was blind, and had been blind 'from tho ago of fifteen. Ho only knew by his sensitivo touch tho shape of the boats lie designed, yet that touch enabled 'him constantly to correct and modify the subtle curves of tho modern racing yacht. His must surely be one of tho most remarkable cases of overcoming tlie terrible handicap of blindness. The shape of the modern yacht was something lie had never scon. Yet he could conceive it in his mind, and carry it, as English yachtsmen know too well, to perfection. High-grade cattle fodder is a- new French product from tomaito seeds. The seeds arc dried in a furnace, sifted to remove wood.y fibre, crushed by heater millstones, freed from oil in a. hydraulic press, and compresscd into fourpound loaves.
