Mrs Raphael gave evidence that she and lier husband were staying at an hotel 'when one night lie came noma intoxicated, and created a disturbance, The following day, while she wasaway, her husband took his trunks and disappeared. She was homeless- and moneyless, and acting on a friends advice went to another hotel. Tho jury intimated that' they did not desiro to hear further evidence, but the Judge said the defendaut must he crossCX [Mrs. CCl ' Majorio 'Augusta Raphael, well known in Australia, was committed for trial for alleged fraud and false pretences by obtaining, credit at, a leading hotel; also for obtaining £000 worth of l jewellery and using it to pay her debts to a drapery firm. The evidence £bow« ed that accused was locked out of her hotel. Her husband filed a petition in bankruptcy in March.]
