A SPECIAL RESERVE

OF 1000 MEN. The Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Allen) stated yesterday that the Government has decided to comply with tho Imperial Government's request for a spccial reserve contingent of 10 per cent, on tho main forces They aro going to provide 10 per cent, reserve for the Mounted and tho Infantry. This will, mean a standing reservo in New Zealand of 1000 men. Theso extra men will be called up in November, when 3500 men will bo required, and 2500 men per month thereafter. Tlio men from tho reserve will bo drafted into the force as required, the reserve to he maintained at its original strength, so that there will always be 1000 men available as an emergency.
