MEN NEEDED TO FILL GAPS

RIFLE BRIGADE SHORT About 60 men enlisted in Wellington yesterday, and nearly all of them signed on for infantry. Tho Defence authorities aro advising all who enlist to choose tho infantry branch of t'lio service, and it has been .pointed! out to some that their prospects of getting into camp early will bo considerably enhanced hy ontering as infantry or mounted men. When the men for our quota of infantry for tho Rifio Brigade paraded at the Garrison Hall on Tuesday tho rollcall'revealed that thero was a shortage of 71—that 71 men who were called had not appeared. Some men who had not been called caino forward, and l the actual shortage was reduced to 63. Lato on Wednesday it was decided to malto an eflo -t to fill those 63 blanks by Friday morning. Hurriedly, 63 men who were on the waiting list wero telegraphed to, and asked to parade at Garrison Hall at 9 a.m. on Friday At the outside there was only a clear day's notice, but most of the 63 came forward yesterday morning, and as thero wero others waiting to fill any vacancy, 57 men wero dispatched to Trentham. The quota is now only six men short. Men may Co Straight to Camp To-day. To-day there is another chance for men who are anxious to get into camp immediately. Word was received in Wellington yesterday that 70 men were needed from here to make up shortages in camp and enable training to begin. It is understood that the shortages have occurred in the South Island. No regular notifications to come forward have been sent out by the Defence authorities, hut any of the men who have passed as fit and are now on tho books may parade at Garrison Hall at 9 o'clock this morning, and they will he in camp by this afternoon. They will bo attached to the Rifle Brigade.
