DARDANELLES ENTERPRISE
A WITHDRAWAL URGED By IWeeTaph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. October 16, 0.40 a.m.) London, October 15. Lord Milner, in the Houso of Lords, said that whatever evils resulted from the disastrous Balkan developments, they gave au opportunity which might not recur for withdrawing from the Dardanelles enterprise, the successful completion of which was now hopeless. He did not want to press the Government for its reasons, hut had heard statements that the abandonment would have a bad effect on our prestige in the East.
Ho could not help thinking whether it would not have a worse effect if we persisted Mid the enterpriso ended in. complete disaster. He felt we had gone on too long living from hand to mouth; in regard to our policy of strategy, and our diplomacy in the Balkans. Starting as we did with a clean record, it was profoundly disappointing when wo found the States wo had befriended drifting into the control of States whom the Balkans had hitherto regarded with 1 suspicion.
