The punitive expedition against the tribe implicated iu the murder of Laycock captured and put in gaol tlie chief, a number of relatives, and burned a village. The actual murderers escaped. [A 'well-known Sydney planter-trader named Laycock was murdered at the Island of Makira, in the Solomon Group. He was engaged in a recruiting tour, and was standing iu a dinghy, talking to a recruiter, when a native suddenly struck him on the neck with an axe; almost severing his head. The crime is inexplicable, as the Makira boys were quite well known to and liked Laycock. The murderer escaped to the bush.]
