CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Wellington City Council met last evening. Tlicro wore present: The Mayor (Mr. J. I'. Lulce), Councillors W. T. Hildreth, It. A. Wright, A. Veitcli, M. F. Luckic, W. H. Bennett, L. M'Kenzie, W. J. Thompson, A. It. Atkinson, J. Hutcheson, J. Godber, G. Frost, W. H. P. Barber, and T. Bush. The City Solicitor was instructed to lake tho necessary steps to have the land required for tho erection of the Constable Street Firo Station, on tho Town Belt, Constablo Street, acquired under the Public Works Act, and tho necessary financial arrangements are to be made for the erection of tho station. The estimated total cost of the station is £3601).
Tho By-Laws Committee reported that they had had occasion to call before them two cabdrivers, one who had been convicted for demanding a higher fare than permitted by the scale of fares, and one who' was convictcd for leaving his liorse 'and cab unattended in the public street. The tivo men had been reprimanded'and warned that any other breach will result in loss of license.
All offer by the Crawford Estate t'o sell to tho council a section of land between Crawford Road and Vallance Street, Kilbirnic, for the formation of the_ right-of-way was not accepted. Tho petitioners for the culvcrting of the Waipapa Stream are to be informed that the council will be prepared to consider the question of tho construction of a culvert provided the owners of property through which the, stream flows agree to contribute a fair proportion of the cost of the work. The City Engineer is being instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost.
A request for the formation of a zigzag from Tanera Crescent to Oliiro Road was not acceded to.
_ Authority was granted for the. erection of a fence along the edge of tho formation of the road between Oliiro Bay and the Run Round, to prevent carters obtaining access to the beach. Permission was granted for the erection of a smoke-house a,t Moore Street, off Thorndon Quay. The applications of two taxi-cab drivers for the renewal of their cancelled licenses were not granted.
