CAMP ARRANGEMENTS
NEW PLANS FORCE CHANGES,
The calling up of extra bodies of troops which will have to take place sliortly lias caused the Defence authorities to alter their plans slightly regarding the disposition of men in camps. A statement of the Department's intentions was given to a rej>ortcr by the .Defence Minister yesterday. "Trentham camp is designed to accommodate 4500 men," he said, "and we do not propose to put any larger number of men there. Tho camp at Tauherinikau was designed for 3500 men, but we propose to enlarge 1 the camp to accommodate 4500 men there. This will not entail a very great expense, as all the main buildings will sorve for the larger force. We shall want more hutments, bat that is about all. Just now we have a ..temporary camp at Maymorn, at Upper Hutt, and as it is <vn excellent, sito wo may remain there, and presently we shall reestablish the Rangiotu camp. Wo shall have 9000 men in permanent camps in hutments, and 3000 men under canvas. There is only this difficulty about keeping men under canvas, that our tents are wearing out, and it is difficult to replace them in New Zealand. We have had some tents from Lidia,. which are ill use at Maymorn, and I believo they are excellent. We propose to get some more of thenv. They are not bell tents,' hut they are of oomo different pattern. I am told by the staff that they are very, good, and that General Henderson highly approves of them. By this'arrangement we have most of our effort concentrated in the one locality— Trentham, Maymorn, and Tauherinikau. We shall draft men out to Rangiotu later."
