The Hon. J. Allen (Minister of Defenco) will go south to Dunediii on Saturday, returning to Wellington on the following Thursday. At the end of next week lie will go back to Dunedin, to meet the transports returning with sick and wounded soldiers on board.
Captain E. 6. Eraser, of Auckland, was the officer who returned to New Zealand in chargo of the twenty-threo convalescent soldiers who returned by the Maitai yesterday.
The following appointments have been made to-State schools bv the Wellington Education Board Mr." T. Kane, of Nelson, to be assistant at Clyde Quay ; Mr. W. Baskiville, of Johnsonville, to lie assistant at Carterton High School; Miss Morris, of Marlborough, to NireHna; Miss Isles, of Kopuranga, to I'ongaroa; and Miss Morgan, of Hawko's Bay, to Newtown. •
A Press Association message from Clfristcliurcli states The Christchurch Presbytery lias decided to nominato tho Rev. Dr. J. Kennedy Elliott, of tho Kent Terrace Church, "Wellington, as Moderator of tho Presbyterian General Assembly.
Lieutenant-Colonel A. E. Loach, of Christchurch, who was severely wounded in the leg and is still suffering from the effoots of his wound, which has paralysed tho lower part of one leg, leaves England for New Zealand very shortly.
Gunner Robert Edward Bayliffe, reported died of wounds at the Dardanelles, was born in Christchurch on July 24 18S7. He was tho only son of Mr. R. A. Bayliffe, postmaster at Marton, but formerly of Waiau, North Canterbuiy. As. a member of the Civil Servico ho was at different times stationed at Hamilton and Wellington, where ho was in the submarine section. He afterwards went to Auckland as a member of the staff in tho Chief Postmaster's room in the G.P.O. Leaving this position he joined tho Main Body in the Third Auckland Mounted Riilcs, ma-chine-gun section, serving with them till August 20, when his death was reported.
Mr. A. 'Asher.. of Vivian Street, haa received advice that his sen, Pte. J. Asher, of the First Australian Battalion, is reported sick, and is now ail inmate in the' Military Hospital at Birmingham, England. Some time ago Pte. Asher waß wounded at Gallipoli, and on recovering again returned to the firing line.
Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., received a cablegram on Tuesday from the Secretary of the War Office, London, informing him that his son, Second Lieutenant D. W. Jennings, of tho Roya' Field Artillery, vras slightly wounded in tho rocent sovere fighting in. Franco on October 4. and has been admitted 1 to' the Dublin Castlo Hospital.
Mr. Vivian Walter Cos has teen promoted to the- rank of sergeant-major and secretary to the Army Service Corps in'the New Zealand Riflo Brigade.
The wounded soldiers'-wlio returned to Napier have been medically examined and Corporal Tweedie is to be recommended for discharge, as it will be impossible for him again to. go to the Front.
Dr. Moorhouse, of Ghristclmrch, -who has been on a visit to the South Sea. Islands,' returned to New Zealand by, the Maitai yesterday.
Mr. S. J. Gully, who has severed his connection with the firm of W. and G. Turnbull and Co. in order to join the Reinforcements, has been presented with, a wristlot watch by his fellow-employees. In making the presentation, Sir. Jas. Macintosh, managing director of the firm, said that several of the firm's staff wero serving the Empire or _ had enlisted, namely, Messrs. Warren, "Brown (wounded), England, Admore, Mitchell, Long, Gully, Kerr, Harrison, Redstone, Maswell, and Kieley, on H.M.S. Philomel.
General regret >vas expressed by all Association footballers wlien the news came through this week that James Paton had been, seriously -wounded in the thigh during the Gallipoli operations. 11l liis day, Mr. Paton was a member of the Rovers Club, and as a Forward and half-back played many good games for his club. In 1900 lie represented Wellington against Otago and Auckland, and after giving up play joined the rallies of the referees and was further appointed to the association aa a member of tho Management Committee. For many years lie did excellent work in these capacities, and in 1913 was oppointed as chairman of tho W.F.A. He was further a member of the selection committee for representative teams, and at the time of joining tho Foir,es was acting as sole selector.
• A Press Association message froit Dunediii states that tho Foreign Missions Committee of tiio Presbyterian Church has requested the Rev. Professor Hewitson, convenor, to proceed to Canton as a- deputation to tho Canton Villages Mission to assist the missionaries in the field and tho Church in the Dominions'in, dealing with; matters of policy in connection with the mission. 'Professor Hewitson cannot roply definitely till »after consultation with! Knox College "Council, but if . lie goes hp will probably leave New Zealand early in November.
Mr. John Swinson, advertising agent, ! who was seriously injured in the railway smash at "Whaugamari.no over eighteen 'months ago,- has ever since been in ths Waikato Hospital at Hamilton. Writing to friends in Wellington, he states that he is going to Auckland to have his leg put under X-rays,.and he has been given what ho describes as "a month's holiday," three weeks of which he will spend at his liome at the Hutt, arriving in Wellington 011 October 23.
