WHEAT AND FLOUR
REIMPOSE THE DUTIES? iWlien does tire Government intend to leimpose the duties on wheat and flour P This question was addressed to the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. J. Anstey. In support of a request that the duties should be at once reimposed, he said that there were in New Zealand now large quantities of wheat which could not under any circumstances be sold. Already tho price obtainable was below the cost of production, and! the producer ought to have some protection against outside competition. _ ■ The Prims Minister said he intended ' to bring the matter before Cabinet at its first meeting. He did not think it would be necessary to remit the duty for a very much longer period. In a tow weeks tho Australian harvest would be saved, and large quantities of wheat .would come here as a matter of course. It was his own opinion that if we <M not give to wheat growers some encouragement we should again find) ourselves in the unfortunate position or Hot having sufficient wheat for our own requirements. And he was strongly or opinion that we should grow enough wheat to feed our people. Much as lie disliked imposing _ou foodstutts he thought it would be in the interest of all our people that, we should give farmers such protection as would induce them to grow enqugh wheat for oui own x requirements.
