NEW RECRUITS FOR CAMP

CITY MEN'Sr MARCH

CHEERED IN THE STREETS

SEVENTY-ONE MEN MISSING

AT BOLL CALL

. Ou Saturday Wellington witnessed the Stirring spectacle of its Gained troops .marching ,'througK'. .tho!; streets of the City. Yesterday the City turned out to see a body of untrained men marching .to enter'on their military' career—a fighting career undertaken out of a Sense of duty—a duty to homo and Empire. They were entirely Cityand suburban men, but they, did not hum-, one-third of the last body of.: new ruits which honoured the City with V march. The City quota for the Eighth lleinforccments which marched to the fcamp train in August last numbered »vor 400. Yesterday only 145 wero on 'parade. They were our quota of the (Third and Fourth Battalions of the jßiflo Brigade, and our N.C.O.'s for the (Tenth Reinforcements; , j The men assembled at the Garrison Hall, Buckle Street, early in the morning, and the local staff performed the of putting them in order for ''dispatch. to Trentham Camp. Shortly belforo ono o'clock ,tho order was given to S?ot out for Lambton Station, and, headfed by the Fifth Regiment band, the (soldiers-to-be marched off.

, The men took a routo through Tara- '. ■yaki Street, Vivian Slroet, Cuba Street, Planners Street, Willis. Street, and ; ILambton Quay. All along the line of inarch tho people turned out in crowds to cheer them on their way. Pavements, balconies, and windows were thronged [with enthusiastic spectators. The recruits were obviously taking the pro'■coedings quite seriously, but were very jwheorful and happy about it all. They answered back the cheers of the crowd, and gave tho band a welcome respite by ■ 'singing the ever-green "Tipperary" dur- • Sing a lull in the musical programme.' [Inevitably someone in tho raifks inquired: "Are we down-hearted ?." And •the answer wa-s good to hear. Their y"No!" had to bo heard to be appreciated. Physique of the Rocruits. We have sent so many men away from New Zealand that anyone interjested in the physique of the men naturally soutinised these new recruits .rather closely To tho surprise of many, tho ;City draft for the Eighth wore of even Miner" physique than the men of some iof the earlier drafts. Yesterday's draft !,was almost as good physically 86 the : fOSighth, certainly quite as good as the r leverage' draft., since the beginning of . I the , war. , , Another thing of interest to even ■casual observers at this stage of tho war was the number of eligible men •who.viewed from the footways and door- ' ways this march to ■ war of their no ■more eligible follow citizens. . The parade was witnessed by scores of (young men who were mere spectators. They cannot all have enlisted,, for the ' hooks don't contain bo many surplus ''names.. Notwithstanding that Wellington City .has .done so welly it, appears •tO; have men yet, without responsibilities, who have not yet caught sight in their mind's-eyo of that imperishable . signal: ' • ■ - ' "England expects that every man this day will do his duty!" Infantry Quota Short. Tho quota has gone into camp short of men. AVe were asked vto supply 175 men from the City, and presumably 175 wero called up. One! hundred and fifty of these were for the infantry branch, which may in a general sense be deemed the most important in the service. However, the roll-call revealed Va. shortage of seventy-one men—all infantrymen; Just one half tho. men who liad been called up for this all-important Beotion of the service failed to answer , tho call to arms. Worse still, only 1 seven of these blanks were filled, and tho City quota marched off from the " Garrison Hall sixty-four short in -its infantry strength. :A few months ago tho experience was that where ono man ' failed to appear four clamoured for tho privilege of- filling the. vacancy! : ... The reason , for yesterday's heavy shortage is not apparent. One officer 'attributed it to tho fact that the men ,Vho did not answer the roll had been on the books so long that they had •got work which they now did not wish 'to leave in a hurry. Another member ;of tho Department's staff said that this view could not be correct, as none of •tho men called for yesterday's' quota had been long on the books. Whatever . the opinions, however, these facts are Certain.: Infantry called up :....... 1150 Infantry response 79 Failed to appear 71 Secured by chanco 7 Actual shortage C 4 Names of tho Nev; Recruits.
