CIVIL SERVANTS
QUESTION OF ENLISTMENT.
Dr. Thacker (Christchurch East) asked the Prime Minister in Parliament yesterday whethor he would give an assurance that during the recess the National Cabinet would give facilities for every servant in tho Civil Service to enlist, provided he was fit. He understood. that not only in the Defence Department, but in the Printing Department, there were a number of men who could not get the right to enlist. Mr. Massey said that the return placed before the House last week indicated that up to the present no difficulties had been placed in the way of Civil Servants desiring to enlist. Ho could not give a definite promise such as the member had asked for, because some branches of the Service found it impossible to allow further officers to go—lie was spealSngof engineers and surveyors more especially. The Govern, ment was doing everything possible to give the necessary facilties.
Mr. Wilford: What about using the Women's Reserve?
Sir.. Massey: Every woman in New Zealand will Jiavo the opportunity of offering her services to New Zealand within a few weeks, and stating what she is able and willing to do.
