THE URGENT CALL
NEW TROOPS TO-DAY
THE CAMPAIGN IN THE .U CITY
GOOD RECOVERY
OVER 100 MEN IN TWO DAYS
Nearly 6000 iiew recruits will go into the military camps this month, and the mobilisation of these forces begins today. Early this morning the men of Wellington City and Suburbs wlio have been called up for the Third and Fourth Battalions of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade will assemble at the Garrison Hall, Buckle Street, and' some time later in the day, probably between noon and one o'clock, they will march through the City to lambton. Railway Station, where they will entrain for Trentham. I'hey will number about 250.
This day next week tho City and Suburban quota for the Ninth Reinforcements will proceed to camp to enter on their training. '
The men for the extra battalions and the Ninth Reinforcements will total about 5300, and tho City's share of that number is 375.
Troops from all over New Zealand will bo passing through Wellington,' bound for Trentham, during the next few days, and as. we -have now called 1 -up 36,000 men . a groat deal of interest will no doubt be taken in the physical appearance of-tho men. • The last batches of raw recruits who marched through the City were of excellent physique, and it is understood that to-day we may again look forward to being able to say that New Zealand can still send men of firstrate physique forward to be trained for tlio front.
The men for the Rifle Brigade who make their entry into military life tomorrow will first proceed to the big camp,at,Tranthani, but will not remain thero long. The whole of the forco will be mobilised there, and the ! men will receive their equipment. On Saturday the men will march to Mungaroa, where a canvas' camp is 1o be prepared tor them. AtMungaroa they will do acourse and preliminary training for six weeks or so, and then move on to Rangiot-u to complete their training. ,Tho Mungaroa camp is on the'old May Morn Mill property, and ,the. Defence Department have had it equipped with a railway siding. In all about 2500 men will camp at Mungaroa. _ When the men of the Rifle Brigade go into: camp this week New Zealand will have: sent into camps for : training a total of about 33,000 men, as follows:— Gone to the front 27 000 Partly trained . 3^500 Entering camp '2^500
•' .Total'.. 33,000 „A "'eek' from now the men for the Ninth Reinforcements will begin to make-camp,-and they, with the n.c.o'i for the Tenth, will number about 3300. So, by next, week our forces at tho front and in .training will. number, between 36,000 and 37,000 men. . Men are still very .urgently needed in the City for the , next drafts to'be sent into camp, and it is pleasing to see that recruiting has made somewliat of a recovery here. This seeuis to bo due in a measure to : tho opening of a central office. In the last two recruiting days (Saturday and Monday) over 100 men enlisted, and four-fifths of them signed on at the Town Hall office. On Saturday and Monday 20 men returned their papers to the Buckle Street office. On Saturday 5-5 men enlisted at the Town Hall, and 47 returned their papers. Yesterday 33 men enlisted at the Town' Hall, which brings their two days' total up to 88. t The. voluntary recruiting officers' at 'tho Town Hall are .of opinion that some doctor should be available, to examine recruits at the Town Hall at any lime during which the recruiting office is open. Nearly all the mdn who have enlisted thero have signed on for infantry, for which branch men are badly needed. Very few of the recruits are married men. ■
