At the latest he was an acting-lieuten-ant-colonel, and had charge of the Hood Battalion of tho Naval Brigado. To bring tho Brigade into line with' Major Froyberg's rank, it is assumed that either the Brigade had been created a military branch or that he has been drafted into tho Army.

A Press Association message frortf London (received last night) states that Lieut. Butterworth, of tho Rifle Brigade, a New Zoalandcr, was killed in Flandgrs.

A large representative gathering of residents of Eastbourne ana Day's Say, as well as several regular passengers, met on the deck of the ferry steamer Duchess yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Captain G. P.'Evans, late master of tho vessel. Captain Evans is proceeding to England to offer his services to the Admiralty. The Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr, J. P. Kelly), in presenting Captain Evans with a sextant, made reference to that officer's admirable qualities, and on behalf of the residents of the borough and the travelling public to "the Bay," wished him the best of good fortune. It was mentioned that three other officers of the Eastbourne Ferry; Company's staff have enlisted. Their names are Messrs. W. Organ, late Mayor, W. Guildford, and Evans.

Troop-Sergt. J. M. Earle, of the 7th Mounted Reinforcements, has been pro* moted to the rank'of sergeant-major.

A veteran of .the siege of Luckuow, Mr. John Robert Smith, diocl at his residence in St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell, on Friday morning, at the age of 83 years. Deceased arrived in New Zealand in the "'seventies," and was for 25 years manager of St. Stephen's Native Boys' School. Mr. Smith, who was a native of Lincoln, England', entered the army when he was about 1G or 17 years of age, joining the 32nd Regiment, Light > Infantry—now tho Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He held two medals for active service ill Afghanistan and India, and was twica wounded while taking part in the.defence of Lucknow. Ho was invalided home, and after acting as recruiftng officer for two years, he held a position in St. Bartholomew s Hospital for 13 years. On arriving in New Zealand, Mr. Smith engaged; in various pursuits prior to taking over the management of St. Stephen's School, whore his-mili-tary and hospital training 6tood him on good stead. For the last few years ho lived in quiet retirement. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, who is tho daughter of the lato Mr. Philip King, who was a son of Mr. J. King, who was appointed in Now Zealand as a missionary agejifc the Rev. * Samuel Marsdeu.

Sir p E. Petherick has undergone an operation in the Kensington Private Hospital, and is progressing favourably. By tlio last mail from the Dardanelles Mr. Walter Christie received word that his son, Sergeant H. A. ( Bert ) Christio had been promoted to the rank of second lieutenant attached to 3So. 1 Battery N.Z. Field Artillery. , ten " ant Christie left with the 3rd Battery, as sergeant, and later was made ser-geant-major. He was a member of the ■•D" Battery for.several years, and latterly joined the Permanent Artillery. • Before leaving Wellington Trooper K. L. Caverhill, of the Seventh Mounted Rciuforcemcnts, son. of Mrs. Ln\©rliiilj of Roua Bay, received promotion to the rank of corporal.
