A TRAMWAY SOCIAL

TO MEN DEPARTING FOR THE FRONT. 'A' complimentary "social" was tendered by tlie Tramway \lnion last evening to those of its members who are leaving for the front, there being a very large gathering, presided over by Mr. Knox. Among those present were the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), the Hou. J. Allen, Councillors J. E. Fitzgerald and G. Frost, and Mr. D. M'Laren. In proposing tbo toast of "Parliament" Mr. D. M'Laren spoke of the work that tlio Labour organisations are doing with respect to recruiting at Home, and suggested that similar efforts mignt be put forward by local Labour bodies.

In responding, tho_ Hon. J. Allen stated that he was entirely against conscription, and lie hoped and believed that the requisito number of men would be forthcoming without tho aid of compulsion. Whatever iren -were required, he felt suro tQiey would bo raised by the ivill of the people. The Mayor agreed with the suggestion of Mr. M Laren, and also assured those inon of the Tramway Union 1 that the council would do all in their power to assist the cause and stand, by those men who were answering the call of the country. Mr. C. Patchett proposed the toast o ,"The Boys at the Front," while Mr. M Gillivray proposed the toast of "The Guests"—Messrs. Newstead, Clifford, Luscombo, Smith, M'Dousall, Fernandez, Fallintine, Dunlop, White. Couper, Brown, and Fraser. Presentations were also made to the soldiers. Messrs. A. Coupor and M'Dougall replied on behalf of their fellow guests, while Councillor i* itzgcralcl also spoke. Musical atid other items were rendered during the evening.
