ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS.
A FEW ADDITIONAL; NOTES. , . . (By the Lay Figure.) [The following supplementary notes on the Fine Arts exhibits of the New Zear '•■land Academy were crowded out of our contributor's final notice whicli appeared yesterday.] Pressure on my space precludes extended notice' of many other contributions. Miss D. K. Richmond's ambitious and histhly poetical composition, , "Mouth of the fiutt River" (64) does credit to the artist's sense of beauty, and triumph, ovei'-' tho "difficulties pertaining to the presentment.'of atmospheric effects. , - Tho absence of any important contribution, this year by Mr. Linley Richardson, . H.8.A., is,distinctly regrettable. The •artist's. study of a child's head, "Littlo Alice" (08), is, however, a distinctly graceful and,, delightful drawing. .- -Mr.' Casey's marine studies show a decided improvement in this artist's Work. Mr. -Carter's, pastels exhibit an increasing command of the possibilities of this medium; in which, also, Mrs. Hannah's stii-ly of a little girl's head, "Mavis" (81). Tftis aftist's only contribution tliis year is a pleasing example of her vigorous drawing.
Of Mr.. Esmond Atkinson's contributions, a bush scene, "Nikau and Rata" (I3C), is preferable'to his river scenes on the West Coast, wherein the water haa a .ourionsly woolly appearance.
1 Othor contributions to this section include: 1.. Leo, M. Hartley,.!?. Perry, Jessie Nowtoii (whoso Mount Cook sketch, JOS, is quite good), Mr. E. HawaTd. E. -M. Mundy, A. Paul, 11. Olivant, O. H. Garnhani, P. D. E. Hodgkins j (whoso "Summer Clouds," 27, display a marked VH.viTiro on the artist's. last year's work), 1 ■A. -E. Baxter, H. M. Feaver, Iva M'EldoF;ney. Jfrs Rogers,' and Miss Holmes.
The Ladies' Guild -of the New Zealand Natives' Association is holding a euchre • tournament and social in the association's hall on Wednesday evening, in aid of the sick and wounded soldiers.
Mr. and -Mrs. W. Holmes (Auckland) and Miss Holmes returned' to the north yesterday from; Wellington.
No sooner does the committee at the Town Hall get one big undertaking off its liands than another looms upon the horizon: The Christmas packing for the men at the front—no light undertaking —has been completed and sent ; on its way to its destination but- in a little while there will be the men at.Samoa to be 'provided with. their Christmas gifts. Waistcoats (leather ones) for the Bth Reinforcements also have to he grappled with. So it will be seen that breathing spaces are few and far between for. the busy workers at tho Town Hall. In the matter of waistcoats the Wellington military' area sent away last week 4700, Christchurch 4500, and Auckland 4100.
